    Hey all,
I was approached recently by an English guy by the name of Connor Lynn asking for gas money outside the Hyatt by Burrard Station. He said he needed the money to fill up his car, which was out of gas, so he could drive home to Coquitlam. I don't typically help people out like this (I'll usually just say no, sorry) and I knew there was a large chance that it was just a scam. But it was the middle of the night and I thought that if he was telling the truth, that I'd potentially save his night.
Unfortunately for me, he wasn't. I searched Google and brought up this UBC Confessions page showing Connor's scam: https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=380557625438248&id=133839236776756
Another page showing the same scam - the same phone number is used 604-499-9551. It's in Chinese - hit translate if you're using Chrome: http://forum.vanpeople.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&action=printable&tid=267636
This is his Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/connor.lynn.39 (His photos are real - that's what he looks like)
Apparently, he's done this to countless others, both in downtown Vancouver and on the UBC campus, for at least half a year now.
Some quick details - He's about 5'11, short dark brown hair, speaks with an English accent - He gives his name as 'Connor Lynn', says he's from Dunstable, England - He says he studies at VFS, though others have said he claimed to be a UBC student - His phone number is 604-499-9551. This is an active number as he actually texted me back on iMessage from this number.
For me, the gas money I lost isn't that big of a deal. However, I'd like to think that Vancouver is generally a nice city where you're not constantly being preyed upon by those looking to take advantage of you. If I fell for this scam (I usually dismiss people asking me for money - especially the homeless, I'm sorry to admit), a lot of others will - especially internationals and students.
Unfortunately for Connor, Vancouver's a small city and word travels quickly. Guys, please spread the word if you can (Facebook if possible) and help keep this city safe.
Thanks a lot for your time.

Looks like he's moving locations; he was at Gilmore station tonight, just around 9 as I was on my way home from work.

One of the oldest scams in the book along with selling speakers out of a white van. I fell for it when I was a 10 year old decades ago. What kind of person goes around scamming kids? I was going to use that $2 to buy candy at the corner store but naively thought I was helping someone out.

This guy got me at Brentwood last night, so he's still active, hahaha; $30 to learn about scamming isn't so expensive, I guess

I just tell them "too bad." I am sick of riff-raff thinking it's my job to take care of them.

whaooooo, imaging if this was a Chinese guy who scam gas money, I guess some stupid people would have something to say about China, like "China is a country full of scam people...".

I don't know if anyone' interested, i just got scammed by this guy today at metrotown. He's grown his hair so he looks a little different now. It's dirty blond and the length comes to about his ears? I think?

In this one case, I have to side totally with Maple Leaf. Yes, there does seem to be a racist double standard. White redneck trash may get away with it, but just let an Indian or a Chinese try it and see all the frothing. The majority of Chinese in Canada are law-abiding and hard-working. It's the Canadian government I blame for letting too many in too suddenly when there is so much poverty. The government is serving the interests of big business at the expense of the majority.

Hey, apparently this is a popular scam done by many people. There's an Asian guy who is 5'7 skinny build. He was at Knight and 33rd lingering around the gas station asking people for money. He claims that his car ran out of gas. He has tattoos on both his legs.

I reported this to the police. If you've been approached by any of these scammers, you should also report it to the police. It creates documentation, so they can know how many people have been victims to these types of frauds.

I just tell them that I'll call the police if they persist in bothering me. "I didn't create your problem, and I don't care to know about it."
